Spirulina is a blue-green, single-cell algae, which is spiral-shaped. It thrives in warm alkaline lakes. The algae float across the top of the water, appearing as floating green scum. It was such a sustaining food by the ancient Aztecs that it was used by them as currency, and we know why!
Spirulina absorbs many essential minerals from the lakes, including potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, iron and phosphorus. It is also rich in B vitamins, including B12, as well as vitamin E, Beta carotene, GLA (essential fatty acid) and chlorophyll.
With all these minerals it is not surprising, Spirulina has multiple healing properties. It has toning and cleansing properties that the body can use to detoxify the liver and kidneys, cleanse the arteries, build, cleanse and enrich your blood and promote intestinal flora (good bacteria) It is also beneficial for weight control, not only because it is low in calories but also contains high levels of phenylalanine, the amino acid which curbs the appetite.
Spirulina has been used in the treatment of anaemia, fatigue, malnutrition, hepatitis, inner inflammation, diabetes, hypoglycaemia and poor skin tone. It is a versatile food supplement which strengthens your immune system and increases resistance to disease and inflammation. it also contains a blue pigment, phycocyanin, which is a protein known to inhibit cancer.
